It’s easy to think timelines are for logistics and spreadsheets. But in reality, your wedding day timeline shapes how the entire day feels.
Done right, it gives you space to breathe, soak it all in, and not feel like you’re being shuffled from moment to moment. It’s not about cramming everything in—it’s about creating a rhythm that lets you be fully present.
Here’s how to build a timeline that works for you, not against you.
1. Pad Everything—Then Pad It Again
Hair and makeup always take longer than expected. Add 30 minutes. Same with travel between locations. This buffer gives you flexibility if something runs behind and lets you breathe if everything’s running smoothly.
2. Start the Day Slow
If you can, begin the morning with intention. Whether it’s a walk, journaling, or just having a coffee with your bridesmaids, it sets the tone. Ask your photographer to arrive once hair and makeup are already mostly done so the energy is calm when photos begin.
3. Consider a First Look
If you want more time for portraits without rushing off after the ceremony, a first look is a game changer. It also gives you a private moment together—rare and emotional in a day that flies by. If you want to read more about first looks, head on over to my blog post here for an in-depth guide.

4. Keep Family Photos Short + Sweet
Have your photographer help you plan this list in advance. Groupings should be meaningful, not exhaustive. Done efficiently, this part can take 15–20 minutes. Done without structure, it can easily take an hour—and test everyone’s patience.
5. Plan Pockets of Stillness

Build moments into the day where you pause. A few minutes post-ceremony alone together. Ten minutes before dinner to step outside. These in-between moments often become people’s most treasured memories.
Because in the end, the timeline isn’t about the photos—it’s about how you feel in the photos. And the more spacious the day feels, the more naturally the joy shows up.
The best timelines don’t just work on paper—they feel good in real life. They create space for you to move through your day without rushing or stress, knowing everything has been thoughtfully considered.
And here’s the good news: you’re not expected to figure it all out on your own. As your photographer, I help build a custom photography timeline in the lead-up to your day—one that reflects your priorities, your venue, and the light. I’ll make sure we’ve carved out space for every moment that matters, without ever making the day feel like a photoshoot.
So you can spend more time being present—and less time checking the clock.
