Why You Should Consider a First Look Before Your Ceremony

The first look has become one of my favourite moments to photograph—it’s raw, emotional, and oh-so-memorable. If you’re wondering whether a first look is for you, let’s dive into the pros and cons of a first look, explore its meaning, and discuss how to make it uniquely yours.

What is a First Look and Why Do it?

A first look is an intimate moment where the couple sees each other for the first time before the ceremony. It’s a chance to connect, calm your nerves, and share a private emotional moment before the whirlwind of the day begins.

Why is it important? First looks allow you to fully soak in the moment without an audience. And let’s be real—wedding days are hectic! A first look gives you precious time to pause and truly be present with your partner.

First Look Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Emotional Connection: You get a quiet moment together to focus on each other.
  • Photography Opportunities: With fewer time constraints, we can capture those raw reactions beautifully.
  • Stress Relief: Seeing your partner can calm pre-ceremony jitters.
  • Timeline Benefits: It allows for more flexibility in your schedule, leaving more time for mingling post-ceremony.

Cons:

  • Tradition: Some couples prefer the drama of seeing each other for the first time at the altar.
  • Nerves: If you’re someone who prefers to save all the emotions for the ceremony, a first look may not be the right choice for you.
  • Logistics: It requires planning to ensure the timeline flows smoothly (but don’t worry—I’ll help you with that!).

Is It Worth Doing a First Look?

In my experience, absolutely! Couples often tell me it was one of the most meaningful parts of their day. Not only does it provide beautiful photo opportunities, but it also allows you to feel more grounded before walking down the aisle.

How to Make Your First Look Special

Pick a Meaningful Spot: Whether it’s under a canopy of trees or at your ceremony location, choose a space that feels personal to you.

Add a Personal Touch: Write letters to each other and exchange them during the first look.

Capture the Anticipation: I love photographing the build-up—the deep breath before you tap their shoulder, the moment they turn around—it’s magic.

Bring Loved Ones: Include your bridal party or family for a group first look.

When Should the First Look Be?

Typically, I recommend scheduling your first look about 90 minutes before the ceremony. This ensures you have time to savor the moment, take couple portraits, and still relax before the main event.

Some couples leave things to chance.

Claire is not one of those people.

Before we even talk about the architecture, the styling, or the dance floor that stayed packed all night, we need to talk about the fact that Claire hired not one, but THREE different Etsy witches to cast a very specific weather spell for her wedding day.

The brief? No rain. Partly sunny. Somewhere between 22 and 27 degrees.

And quite surprisingly, it worked.

If you’ve ever wished you could get married somewhere that feels like Italy — olive groves, rolling hills, wine, late-night feasts, pasta course after course, and that easy-going joie de vivre included — then you’re not alone and this is exactly how I wanted my own wedding day to feel.

One of the first things many couples tell me when they reach out is they want their wedding to feel romantic, intimate, soulful, and yes, Italian in spirit.

There’s something I’ve noticed more and more over the past few seasons of wedding photography: brides are having fun with their fashion again. They’re changing outfits, breaking rules, dancing harder, and choosing pieces that feel like an extension of who they actually are.

And when it comes to bridal mini dresses, one name keeps coming up again and again: Aston Bridal.

I recently sat down (virtually) with Miranda-Lee Aston, founder and designer behind the Sydney-based brand, to talk all things bridal minis.
